Spring 2012 Youth Rights Campaign Intern (Law or Graduate Student)

Dec 20, 2011

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) works to defend and expand individual rights and personal freedoms guaranteed by the Constitution and state and federal civil rights laws. The ACLU of Texas is proud to be the eleventh largest ACLU affiliate in the United States.

Summary of the Position

The ACLU of Texas seeks a highly motivated law or graduate school student, with a demonstrated commitment to human rights and the initiative and energy to see projects to completion, to provide substantive support to its Youth Rights Campaign.  This internship will be located in our Austin office.

The Youth Rights Campaign seeks to end policies and practices that undermine the futures of Texas youth and to ensure equality and dignity for all school-age Texans. The primary goals are to seal the school-to-prison pipeline, end the use of solitary confinement of children in Texas jails, protect students from bullying, and ensure the right of students to form GSAs.

Assignments may include:

  • Conducting fact and legal research;
  • Monitoring legislative actions;
  • Drafting policy papers and public education materials;
  • Engaging in statewide and local advocacy; and
  • Other duties assigned as necessary.

Unfortunately, the ACLU of Texas is unable to fund internships; however, we will assist students to obtain their own funding in any way we can. We will also assist students who wish to obtain clinical or academic credit for their internship.
