Bad Bill Watch 2013

Nov 30, 2012

Bill Summary

Status

Youth Rights | HJR 45 – a constitutional amendment that would prevent state and local regulation of private schools. If private schools receive vouchers or tax credit funding, the Texas Education Agency and other government entities would have no authority to regulate the use of our tax dollars. Filed 11/19/2012
Author: Stickland | Krause
Immigrants Rights | HB 181 – a bill to outlaw day labor centers. The state legislature shouldn’t interfere in local economies by taking control and authority away from cities and counties. Filed 11/13/2012
Author: Zedler
Religious Freedom | HJR 43 – a constitutional amendment that would bar courts from enforcing, considering, or applying religious or cultural law. This is problem in search of a solution. Texas courts already have well established rules for dealing with claims arising under foreign law, including so-called “religious” law. Changing the rules would undermine business contracts involving foreign companies, and make it impossible for family and probate courts to rule on disputes involving foreign marriages and wills. Filed 11/13/2012
Author: Flynn
Women’s Rights | SB 97 – a bill to require that certain so-called “abortifacient” drugs be administered in the presence of a doctor, even if the FDA has said it’s perfectly safe for women to take the drugs at home. The bill would make it very difficult for women in rural parts of Texas, where doctors are in short supply, to access the full range of family planning services they need. Filed 11/12/2012
Author: Patrick

Bills are filed from November pre-filing through the filing deadline in March.
