ACLU of Texas Deferred Law Firm Associate opportunities

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Texas, the Texas state affiliate of the national ACLU, is seeking applications from attorneys and law graduates whose law firms will sponsor them to work at public interest law organizations.

As the ACLU's seventh largest affiliate in the nation's second most populous state, the ACLU of Texas works on the front lines in the fight to protect civil liberties. Our Legal Department focuses on impact litigation across the spectrum of civil liberties and constitutional rights, including Racial Justice work on immigrants’ rights, police practices, prison and jail conditions, and juvenile justice and Individual Liberties work on free expression, religious freedom, GLBT issues and reproductive freedom. For an overview of our recent legal work, go to www.aclutx.org/projects/legal.php.

Fellows will work under the supervision of the ACLU of Texas Legal Director and Staff Attorneys on a broad range of Individual Liberties and Racial Justice issues. Projects will include, but not be limited to, assisting in litigation, drafting legal pleadings and briefs, investigating complaints, completing fact research and legal analysis, and drafting memoranda in preparation for litigation of civil rights cases. Other duties may be assigned as necessary. Fellows will office in our Austin headquarters, where they can take advantage of the city’s vibrant culture and low cost of living.

Qualifications:
Fellows should have a commitment to civil liberties and constitutional rights, and strong legal research and writing skills. Spanish language ability and admission to practice in Texas are preferred but not required.

Application Instructions:
Applications will only be accepted electronically. Interested fellowship candidates should send a resume, cover letter, and short legal writing sample in either MSWord or Adobe PDF to egalvan@aclutx.org, with "Deferred Associate Fellowship” as the subject line. Applications will be considered on a rolling basis and applicants with questions may contact Edith Galvan at the email above or by phone at (512) 478-7300 ext. 112.

The ACLU of Texas is an equal opportunity/affirmative action employer and actively recruits women, people of color, persons with disabilities, and lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals.
