Houston Chapter Board Meetings
The monthly ACLU of Texas Houston Chapter Board meeting is free and open to the public. It is held at the ACLU of Texas office at 1214 West Gray (Lower Floor), Houston, TX 77019, the third Wednesday of every month at 7 p.m.
ACLU Houston Chapter to host Banned Books event October 25, 2008
The Houston Chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union will be hosting its annual Banned Books event on Saturday, Oct. 25 at Brazos Bookstore from 5-7 p.m. Local notables will be reading selections from books that have been banned, restricted or challenged in Texas public schools.
Light refreshments will be served from 5 to 6 p.m. and readings will commence from 6 to 7 p.m. The bookstore is located at 2421 Bissonnet, Houston, Texas, 77005.
The ACLU Houston Chapter’s Banned Books event coincides with the release of Free People Read Freely, Report on Banned and Challenged Books in Texas Public Schools published by the ACLU of Texas. Challenged books include renowned works by Harper Lee, Maya Angelou, C.S. Lewis and Toni Morrison. For the last two years, Houston ISD leads the state in number of reported book challenges.
