Saturday, January 17, 2009
Noon- 2 pm at MLK Academy, 3501 MLK Drive, San Antonio

  • Opening presentation by students at MLK Academy with host Tashonna Williams, clarinet solo by Abijn Bright, and duet by Elijah Lumbreras and Anajanisse Johnson.
  • Al Bronstein, Director Emeritus of the National Prison Project of the ACLU and Chief Staff Counsel of the Lawyers Constitutional Defense Committee, a special ACLU civil rights legal program, from 1964-1968.
  • Sons of Thunder Gospel Choir
  • This event is free and open to the public.

Saturday Evening
6-9 pm at Tommy Moore's Cafe, 915 S. Hackberry, San Antonio

  • Welcoming reception with Al Bronstein, San Antonio Chapter of the ACLU of Texas, Know Why You are Marching Civil Rights and Film committee members, summit participants, Neighborhoods First Alliance, and ACLU supporters.
  • Musical guest Alonzo McKinney from the group Sons of Thunder.

Sunday Morning, January 18, 2009
11am-1 pm at the Holiday Inn Express, 1309 E. Commerce

  • Panal Discussion with Tommy Calvert Jr. a community organizer and member of Neighborhoods First Alliance, and Mario Salas, community organizer and former city council member will share the history and experience of the Know Why You are Marching Civil Rights and Film Series and how the MLK March came to be as successful as it is in San Antonio.
  • 2-3 pm- Wreath laying ceremony at MLK statue in MLK Plaza at E. Houston and New Braunfels Ave.
  • 3-5 pm-Interdenominational MLK celebration service followed by social with international selection of foods/snacks. Location, TBA

Sunday Evening

6-8 pm at MLK Academy Auditorium, 3501 MLK Drive
Screening of award-winning best 2008 documentary by Sundance about Hurricane Katrina, Trouble the Water

8-10 pm at MLK Academy Cafeteria, 3501 MLK Drive

  • Bringing Civil Rights Education Home- Participants will come together in regionally defined groups to coordinate civil rights education activities based on the "Know Why You Are Marching Civil Rights and Film Series" model. Dinner Provided.

Monday, January 19th MLK Day, We March!

  • 9:30 am gather at MLK Academy, 3501 MLK Drive
  • 10 am we will march at the beginning of the procession, just behind the garbage trucks and invited dignitaries, from MLK School to Pittman-Sullivan park.
  • 12 pm- Commemorative Ceremony:
    Key note speaker Manual V. Scott, an original Freedom Writer, and gospel singer Marvin Sapp. Over 100 local organizations will participate in a job fair at the park.
