Examining Racial Disparity

Legislators and TDCJ officials appear pleased that there is racial equity among the Texas prison population. In a House Corrections Committee Meeting on March 22, 2006 legislators informed the audience that they were pleasantly surprised that African Americans only comprised approximately 40% of the prison population and not a majority. TDCJ and criminal justice descisions makers should not be applauded for this. African Americans comprise 12% of the general population in Texas.
