ORGANIZATION OVERVIEW

The American Civil Liberties Union of Texas is a leading civil rights organization in the Lone Star State. We work in courts, legislatures, and communities to protect and extend the civil rights for Texans throughout the state. The ACLU of Texas is both a nonprofit and nonpartisan organization. The ACLU of Texas operates professional offices in Houston, Austin, Dallas, El Paso, and Brownsville, Texas. 

ROLE OVERVIEW

The HR Associate provides overall HR support to the organization and supports the day-to-day processes related to the operation and functioning of the HR Department. This position works closely with members of the HR, Operations, and Finance teams and provides staff with excellent customer services, while maintaining compliance with policies and procedures. 

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Maintains accurate and up-to-date human resource files, records, and documentation.
  • Answers frequently asked questions from applicants and employees relative to standard policies, benefits, hiring processes, etc.; refers more complex questions to appropriate senior-level HR staff or management.
  • Maintains the integrity and confidentiality of human resource files and records.
  • Adminstrates base benefits.
  • Administer employee workforce compliance, including but not limited to: workers comp, unemployment compensation, employment manual, FLSA, EEOC, and ADA.
  • Performs periodic audits of HR records and benefits to ensure that all required documents are collected and filed appropriately.
  • Reconciles benefits statements in a monthly basis.
  • May assist with payroll functions including processing, answering employee questions, fixing processing errors, and distributing checks.
  • Acts as a liaison between the organization and external benefits providers and vendors, which may include health, disability, and retirement plan providers.
  • Assist with new hire orientation.
  • Collects and compiles HR metrics and data from a variety of sources including HRIS and payroll outputs, management and employee surveys, employment records, government labor statistics, best practices, and other sources.
  • Assist with performance, benefit, and compensation review and evaluation processes.
  • Assists with planning and execution of special events such as benefits enrollment, and all-staff events. 
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

ADMINISTRATIVE SUPPORT

  • Organize and inventory program supplies (may require lifting 10-20 lbs).
  • Manages departments packages and correspondence including internal and external mail and email Perform administrative duties including data entry, supply orders, processing special orders, pulling reports, building spreadsheets and templates, etc.
  • Provide coordination and backup support for mail pickup. 
  • Provide administrative assistance to other departments and the organization as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • At least three years experience applying HR fundamental concepts, practices and procedures.
  • Strong data entry skills and knowledge of report writing tools for HRIS.
  • Exposure to Labor Law and employment equity regulations.
  • Effective HR administration and people management skills.
  • High degree of proficiency working with MS Suite and web-based applications.
  • Excellent clerical, data management vocabulary, letter-writing, filing, and other office skills.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment in stressful circumstances.
  • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to develop and maintain good working relationships in person and over the phone with volunteers, staff colleagues and the public.
  • High attention to detail.
  • Flexible work schedule required.
  • Strong understanding of and passion for the ACLU mission.

COMPENSATION

The ACLU offers a generous and comprehensive compensation and benefits package, commensurate with experience and within parameters of the ACLU compensation scale. Starting salary for this role is $50,000.
