Dr. Robyn B. Adams

Dr. Robyn B. Adams is a Texas-born and raised, Black transmasculine, nonbinary lesbian, multihyphenate artist, community-based full-spectrum doula, and Black feminist health communication scholar.

Their work centers Black queer and trans experiences of reproductive justice through poetry, music, storytelling, and community-based art. Through community-based collaborations across Texas, Robyn transforms storytelling into creative work that supports healing, visibility, and political advocacy for reproductive freedom and LGBTQIA+ justice. They are currently the Activist/Scholar in Residence at Southwestern University, funded by the Mellon Foundation, and author of the forthcoming book "Black Queer Stories: Reproductive Justice and the Politics of Erasure."

Project Focus

My current vision is a community-engaged, multidisciplinary project titled "Black Futures in Flesh and Story," centered on documenting and sharing Black queer and trans folks’ experiences of reproductive justice in Texas through storytelling, poetry, and music.

As a Black queer and trans Texan, I believe our stories are essential to our survival and to imagining more just futures. Through "Black Futures in Flesh and Story," I hope to create space for Black queer and trans Texans to speak in our own voices and have our experiences made visible, felt, and part of Texas’ public memory. I want this work to show that our stories are not a side note, but they are a tool for collective freedom.
