HOUSTON – Today, Texas Governor Rick Perry will testify at the House Committee on Homeland Security field hearing entitled “Crisis on the Texas Border: Surge of Unaccompanied Minors” led by U.S. Rep. Michael McCaul. The hearing at South Texas College in McAllen was called in response to the flood of unaccompanied immigrant children crossing the Texas border.
The following statement can be attributed to Terri Burke, executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Texas:
"This is a humanitarian crisis, plain and simple. On the eve of celebrating our nation’s independence, it sends shivers up my spine that our great country is treating frightened, desperate children fleeing extreme violence and crime without basic dignity and respect. Our country is better than that. The ACLU of Texas will be vigilantly watching.”
