The ACLU of Texas and partners are challenging Texas’ anti-voter legislation, Senate Bill 1.

The lawsuit was brought on behalf of the League of Women Voters of Texas, Register, Educate, Vote, & Use your Power – Texas (REV UP Texas), and OCA of Greater Houston.

These organizations argue that numerous provisions of the bill violate the Voting Rights Act, the Americans with Disabilities Act, and the U.S. Constitution.

S.B. 1 makes it substantially more difficult for members of the plaintiff organizations to vote, especially for those who are more comfortable with languages other than English, those with disabilities, and who vote by mail. S.B. 1 places vague and confusing criminal penalties on Texans who provide necessary assistance to voters with disabilities and organize voter education events.

The lawsuit was filed by co-counsel at the American Civil Liberties Union of Texas, the ACLU, the Texas Civil Rights Project, Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund, Disability Rights Texas, and the law firm of Jenner & Block LLP.

This case was consolidated into a federal trial that began in September 2023.
