AUSTIN, Texas – The Texas legislature passed House Bill 229 early Wednesday morning, a bill that rigidly defines sex based on someone’s ability to reproduce and requires state agencies to identify Texans as either “male” or “female” across all government records.

Texas politicians broke records by filing more than 120 anti-transgender bills this legislative session.

The bill will be sent to the governor and is expected to be signed into law.

The following quote can be attributed to Ash Hall (they/them), policy and advocacy strategist for LGBTQIA+ rights at the ACLU of Texas:

“H.B. 229 is a cruel and targeted attempt to erase trans, nonbinary, and intersex Texans from public life. It threatens to further strip away legal protections that shield us from discrimination. Instead of trying to erase trans and intersex people, state officials should focus on addressing real issues like funding our public schools and increasing access to health care for all Texans.”
