Houston – The Texas Department of Public Safety released results of a recent multi-agency law enforcement initiative in the Rio Grande Valley.

The following is a statement from Terri Burke, executive director of the ACLU of Texas:

“While we all share a desire for safer communities, DPS’s ‘report’ fails to address the toll its operation took on our border communities. Fear of the checkpoints eroded border residents’ trust in law enforcement -- trust that is an essential part of achieving safe communities. And while DPS has released a self-serving account of the operation, it continues to withhold information about the checkpoints from government watchdogs who have requested it under the Public Information Act. We again call on DPS to give a full accounting of its actions so that the public can ascertain the truth of what happened at these checkpoints.”
