AUSTIN – American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Texas Executive Director Terri Burke Thursday called upon lawmakers to reject anti-immigrant proposals in the coming legislative session because if enacted, the expensive and ineffective laws would hurt business and undermine local law enforcement.
Burke spoke as a member of a coalition including business leaders; law enforcement; elected officials; religious, civil rights and social justice organizations. “Few issues could bring such a diverse group together except the litany of ill-considered laws and unfunded mandates we anticipate this session. If enacted, laws like that passed in Arizona (SB 1070) won’t make Texans any safer, but will make our state poorer - at a time when we can’t afford to waste money,” said Burke.
These proposals go against the Texas traditions of fairness and equality, and some may violate the Constitution, added Burke.
