GALVESTON, Texas
The inmates at the Galveston County jail in Galveston, Texas, are getting out. They're handcuffed, and it's just for a ride.

The 883 inmates are being evacuated as Hurricane Rita nears. They're being taken to the Harris County jail in downtown Houston.

They're paired, handcuffed to each other, dressed in green jumpsuits and flip-flops, and each is carrying a bedroll. A sharpshooter stood watch as the inmates boarded buses and vans.

The Galveston County Sheriff's Department says their mattresses are following on an 18-wheeler. Authorities don't think they'll run into any traffic problems during the transfer.
