AUSTIN – Charlie Baird, who served on the bench of the 299th District Court for Travis County, will be honored with the ACLU of Texas 2010 Central Texas Civil Libertarian of the Year award, Thursday in Austin.
Baird will be honored for his work in favoring rehabilitative efforts for non-violent offenders, not just as a means to give offenders a chance to succeed in life, but to decrease the burden on society and taxpayers.
While on the bench Baird was also the first judge in Texas to preside over a posthumous exoneration, that of Timothy Cole.
Baird stepped down from the bench at the end of 2010 and has entered private practice with the Fowler Law Firm, also in Austin.
Thursday’s honoring is hosted by the ACLU of Texas and sponsored by NAACP-Austin, Gray Panthers-Austin, LULAC-District 12, Austin AFL-CIO Council, and Witness to Innocence.
