HOUSTON – Reacting to proposal unveiled today by Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst and Senate Education Committee Chairman Dan Patrick, ACLU of Texas Executive Director Terri Burke said: “Not only is this tax credit voucher proposal a terrible drain on already strapped public schools, it undermines a cornerstone of religious liberty.  The Texas constitution puts strict limits on government’s ability to insert itself into matters relating to religion.  That why our constitution forbids the state from using taxpayer money to pay for children to attend religious schools.  We support the right of parents to send their children to religious schools, but not at the state’s expense. This amounts to taxpayer funding of religious education.”
