“Having the National Guard on the border has been expensive and inefficient while making little difference to homeland security. Worse, it has created a militarized zone of Texas cities, towns and ranches and given the impression that our border region is a dangerous wild west, when it is actually quite safe. Furthermore, in recent years the number of undocumented immigrants attempting to cross the border has declined considerably. We applaud the Obama administration’s decision to pull back from this misguided approach to border security. We only wish they were less enamored with Big-Brother technology,” said Terri Burke, Executive Director with the ACLU of Texas.
