BROWNSVILLE, Texas – Customs and Border Protection has begun releasing large numbers of migrants from detention centers along the U.S.-Mexico border.

The following quote can be attributed to Astrid Dominguez, director for the ACLU Border Rights Center:

“We welcome these releases. Families should never be detained, but this practice must be met with skepticism. The federal government’s singular focus on deterrence and harsh immigration enforcement has been to the detriment of humanitarian needs. Rather than spending needless amounts of money locking people up, building a border wall, and pushing asylum seekers back across the border, our government should ensure that we have systems in place to humanely receive and process those seeking refuge from violence, as is their right under U.S. and international law.”
