The following can be attributed to Terri Burke, Executive Director of the ACLU of Texas.

“That Attorney General Eric Holder spoke tonight at the LBJ Library, 46 years after President Lyndon B.  Johnson signed into law the historic Voting Rights Act, signals the importance of ensuring this most fundamental right.  But, with Texas’ history of voter suppression, and after the passage of our state’s new hyper-restrictive voter ID law, Holder’s presence in Austin also holds a special significance for Texans who, like us, fought so hard against this law that will effectively shrink our democracy.  The ACLU of Texas applauds Holder for coming to Texas and for making a strong case about the importance of working to increase voter turnout instead of restricting certain citizens, largely low income folks and people of color, from practicing their constitutional right to vote. It is heartening to hear that the Department of Justice will give Texas’ voter ID law a fair review and ensure that the electoral process remains accessible to all eligible voters.  The right to vote in Texas has been trampled on in recent years, and we are glad that our message has been heard in Washington.”
