August 12, 2017

Like all people who believe in our democratic values of equality and justice, we are outraged by the white supremacist terrorist attack in Charlottesville last weekend. The ACLU of Texas is deeply committed to advocating for the rights of marginalized communities throughout our state, and we stand with all those targeted by these despicable events.

Throughout our history, we have defended peaceful marches and protests in public spaces, even on behalf of those whose views we find personally repugnant. But the First Amendment cannot be used as a shield for violence. The deliberate carnage perpetrated in Charlottesville has no place in the Lone Star State. Our staff condemns all violent calls to action.
