On Friday, a day after a citizen filibuster took place late into the morning at the State Capitol, a bipartisan poll was released demonstrating that a majority of Texans oppose current bills in the Texas legislature to restrict abortions and that 80 percent think a the special session should focus on jobs and the economy, not issues like abortion. A link to the poll, conducted by Greenberg Quinlan Rosner Research and Chesapeake Beach Consulting, may be found here.

“Last night’s citizen protest at the State House of Representatives proved the accuracy of this poll. Hundreds of newly engaged voters stood up to be heard, even when their microphones were cut off, “ said ACLU of Texas Executive Director Terri Burke. “They had come to a committee hearing to tell legislators ‘enough’ – that politicians have no business regulating a woman’s deeply personal medical decisions.”

“The bipartisan, statewide poll makes clear that Republicans and Democrats alike agree that we need no further restrictions on abortion. In fact, this poll shows that only a handful of people at the farthest extremes have strong feelings about this issue. There are so many other, pressing issues facing our state,” said Burke. “When will Rick Perry and David Dewhurst understand that Texas has real problems that need to be addressed. This isn’t one of them.”
