Earlier this year an all-male town council passed an ordinance that would criminalize abortion. Since then, multiple other cities in Texas have passed similar bans. Learn more about what we're doing to fight back.
The ACLU of Texas works to ensure that every woman in our great state can make the best decision for herself and for her family about when and whether to have a child, without undue influence by politicians and special interest groups.
The decision to have an abortion is deeply personal, and is best left to a woman, her family, and her doctor. But in spite of the constitutional guarantee to safe, legal abortion services established by Roe v. Wade in 1973, extremists in the Texas legislature have worked to render abortion services inaccessible to as many Texas women as possible. In 2013, for example, state legislators ignored the voices of the thousands of Texas women who had gathered in and around the Capitol and passed one of the most restrictive anti-choice laws in the country.
Abortion is one of the most common medical procedures performed today, and it’s incredibly safe. We must fight back against laws that make it difficult if not impossible for a woman to get an abortion if she needs one.
