WASHINGTON — In a 4-3 decision, the U.S. Supreme Court today upheld the race-conscious admissions program at the University of Texas at Austin. The ruling means the school will be able to continue using race as one of multiple factors in admissions decisions. The American Civil Liberties Union and the ACLU of Texas filed an amicus brief in this case.
Rebecca L. Robertson, legal and policy director for the ACLU of Texas:
“After nearly a decade of litigation, including two separate arguments before the Supreme Court itself, the justices finally affirmed what teachers, parents and school administrators have known for years: that diversity in education is essential for student success.”
Dennis Parker, director of the ACLU's Racial Justice Program, had this reaction:
"This decision reaffirms the value of diversity in higher education and preserves the ability of colleges and universities to further that value through well thought-out admissions plans."
